Do what you LOVE!

Guys, I have a story to tell….

Do you ever have a moment at work where you feel like, "Yes. THIS is what I am meant to do."

That moment hits me every time someone like you walks in to Dylan Star and tells me all of your worries, and hurdles, and frustrations with clothes ... and an hour later walks out, bags in hand (sometimes tears in your eyes) like a brand new girl ready to take on the world.

But that moment hit me harder than ever before last week.

Pictured here is Janice, a hair stylist at Salon U, and her client Diana.

This beautiful women has been suffering with some health challenges and just needed to take a day to forget her problems, be happy and feel good - what better way than having your hair done, amiright?

Her husband brought her in, and while she was busy and distracted, he came over to me at the store.

He said, "things have been hard lately, and I want to surprise my wife with some new clothes."

He picked out EVERY SINGLE PIECE from head to toe - shirt, pants, fur coat, scarf, earrings - the whole look. Then we wheeled her over to the store, cleared out the dressing room, and he dressed her in her new fabulous outfit. Now I'm crying, they're crying, Janice is crying...because this couple's love for each other is next level. And because I am so grateful to be a small part of this special moment, and to be reminded this is what I was born to do.

So I am sharing this story

1.) because its a great story and her husband deserves a gosh darn gold medal

2.) Because if you don't feel that way about what you do at work, let that fuel you to make a move. Life is fragile, and take it from me, your dreams are worth chasing.

xoxo, Erica

Here's lookin' at YOU!

When I started telling people that I would be opening up at clothing store on state street, the looks and reactions I got were not all positive…I would be lying if I said I did not have my doubts and fears.

BUT, I’m so glad that I did not let my fears takeover! I felt the fear and did it anyway. I stuck with my gut and focused on the encouragement to GO FOR IT!

Who supported me? Well, YOU!

  • the fashionable,

  • the hard working,

  • the Santa Barbara women that want to have FUN while they shop.

The gals that want to strike up conversations and get real feed back on what looks good and what doesn’t. I want my customers to know that when I say,“that looks fabulous on you,” I really mean it!

This week marks our 5 month anniversary and there is no sign of turning back now. I am humbled by the loyalty you all have given to Dylan Star. I couldn’t have done it without YOU! Here is why I opened a store in Santa Barbara…

So…. now I want to hear from YOU!

Here’s the deal…

Send me a short video, (easiest way is to send in my DMs on Instagram) of just ONE thing that you love about shopping at Dylan Star. We will post and tag our favorites next week and give you lovely shoppers a little thank you gift from us:)

I cannot wait to see what you all have to say!

Make 2019 Your Year to Shine

With the start of a new year, I know many of you may have been thinking about goals focused on health and fitness.

I hope you include self-love as a resolution! Feeling confident and beautiful in your own skin is just as important as working out and eating healthy.

Since opening my store, I started noticing a pattern…

When I help women in the fitting room, the majority of them hesitate after telling me their size. Then they follow up with an excuse, explaining why they are that size.

enough with the excuses!

There is absolutely NO reason for you to justify your size to me.

Your size is just a number.

That’s it.

Your size does not define who you are, what you have accomplished, or everything you have experienced.

Your size is ONLY important because it helps you find the perfect fitting outfit!

Every mark tells your story.

Your wrinkles, scars, cellulite, stretch marks, etc., complete your story.

Whether it’s one filled with wine nights with friends, a loving family, or a demanding career, your body has been there with you throughout the journey!

We are all perfectly imperfect and that’s what makes us human.

It’s about time we all learn to be kinder to ourselves and to our bodies.

Be Loud. Be Proud.

Helping women find clothes that they adore, while also giving them an amazing shopping experience, is why I love what I do.

I want every person to walk out of my store, feeling more confident and more beautiful than when they walked in.

In an effort to help make that possible, I have one simple request from you…

If you come into my store, try on clothes and tell me that “you are proud to be a size ___,” I will be more than thrilled to give you a 10% discount!

Yup, it is that easy.

Think of it as…the first step towards making this year the best one yet!

So what are we going to do in 2019?

We are going to love ourselves, our bodies, and our perfect imperfections.

Because you deserve it.

See below for a Q&A from the designer, Tera Carraher…

Q&A with Designer Tera Carraher

1.  How are your ponchos/bags made?

My handbags are all crocheted.  The majority of my bags are crocheted out of 100% wool then felted.  The felting process takes longer than crocheting the bag.  I put several bags in the washing machine at the same time so that the wool fibers agitate together to bond.   I use very hot water and turn off the machine to add boiling water a couple of times during the cycle while I physically work and mold the bag.  Rinsing in cold water shocks the fibers and makes the bag nice and dense.  The bags take about 2 days to air dry naturally.  Then the fun begins when I shave the fibers, attach the finishing touches like adding cool beads and vintage jewelry pieces.  All of my bags come as clutches but you can add one of my many colored hand-braided leather detachable straps as a nice option.

My ponchos are made out of fabulous fabrics I choose carefully.   I buy gorgeous African mudcloth fabrics from an African dealer who travels to Mali in South Africa.  The unique patterns are indicative of specific tribes are all vintage and one of a kind.  I love my ponchos so much and enjoy watching people find their perfect match!

2.  How long have you been making these beautiful products?

I began making crocheted soutache handbags in the mid 90’s.   I first made a bag for my sister, then my mother wanted one so I bought more soutache, (rayan cording) and had enough for one for myself.  Then a friend wanted one and while spending hundreds of hours watching my children at their sporting events I was selling to every soccer and volleyball mom.  Nordstrom picked me up and soon I was in 6 Orange County stores and doing trunk shows sitting next to Santa.  I sold over 4,000 handbags I personally made during my 8 year run.  My hands literally wore out and I retired.   Fast forward 15 years, I separated from my husband and didn’t know what to do with myself when everyone suggested the same thing, start a new handbag line!

I moved to Santa Barbara to work with my sister Tamara,  who owns a thriving staging business, Santa Barbara Staging Solutions.  I love working and creating with her but I also needed to meet “my own people” and display my wares so I also began selling my handbags at the Santa Barbara art walk.  Since I work with beautiful textiles while home staging I fell in love with African mudcloth and experimented until I created the perfect poncho and have found success with both my ponchos and handbags.  Now I have added gorgeous India kantha fabrics and have made reversible and colorful one of a kind ponchos with this incredible hand stitched fabric.

3.  When do you feel the most creative?

I find most of my inspirations while decorating homes and working with textiles.  I crochet during my art shows and can work on handbags while talking to interesting people from all over the world.  People get a kick out of my speedy hands while not missing a beat talking with them.

4.  You are such a stylish lady - who are some of your favorite stylish celebrities?

I love fashion and enjoy so many different styles.  I just love women (and men) who do what they like and are comfortable wearing whatever makes them own what they wear.  We are a global society and it’s so cool to add different twists and rock whatever your mood is.  As far as stylish celebrities, does my biggest crush Blake Shelton in his blue jeans and denim jacket count?  Oh baby if only he wore one of my ponchos!!!!

Come meet Tera and shop her beautiful, handmade pieces this Wednesday, December 12th from 1-5pm!

Denim at Dylan Star

Good jeans feel SO good. But shopping for a pair takes time, amiright?

I want to help you overcome the hurdle and help you shop for a new pair. I carry two lines, Flying Monkey & Just Black, in sizes 24-31, that I live by (and live in.)

Why do I love them?

Trendy: each pair has some fun little detail whether it’s flyaway buttons, frayed ankles, ripped knees. Just enough to make them special, but not over the top to where you’ll be sick of them next week.

Made in LA: Both companies are based, designed, and made just hours away in Los Angeles. Gotta love that.

Good Price: Nothing over $100. Some pairs as low as $50

Comfort: If people are saying their denim feels like yoga pants or pajama pants, you know they will feel comfy all day long on you!

Quality: These are not fast-fashion jeans. You don’t have to worry about them looking fabulous on day 1, and falling off your bee-hind on day 3. (For even longer use, see washing and care tips below.)

Variety: We have it all, dark, stonewash, black, white and even camo, olive and maroon in stock! (Plus jean shorts and skirts!)

Flattering: I have seen these jeans work on a variety of shapes and sizes. Curvy, slim, petite, tall and everything in between. Regardless of size and shape, the feedback is the same, “These jeans feel so good!”

I know buying jeans is a chore. So let’s make it fun.

If you come in tomorrow (Thursday) to shop for denim, I’ll pour you a glass of champagne, pull your sizes, run back and forth from your dressing room and give supportive yet honest feedback until we find your perfect pair. Are you ready? Let’s do this.

What are Dylan Star customer saying about their denim? …

  • Adoring my button fly jeans! @laurendeason_

  • I have two pairs of jeans - they are extremely comfortable. I don't want to wear anything else. @brielane

  • Love my olive green jeans! My mother in law bought a pair too! @scruse7

  • Luv my jeans! I wear them all the time. They are so soft and comfy! I get lots of complements on them! @blondie_2005

  • I looooove my button up jeans! I want another pair! @jfratt

  • Mine are as comfy as yoga pants!!! @sandikillackey

  • I bought a pair of distressed Flying Monkey straight leg jeans and I LOVE them! @marianne.barajas

How should you care for your denim?

You found your perfect pair of jeans! Now, I’m here to help you make sure that they stay perfect. Here are four golden rules to keep your denim in prime condition.

1.   Don’t wash your jeans! Well, not often at least. Washing them too often diminishes the longevity of your jeans and the color will start to fade. Denim naturally becomes softer and fits to your body better over time, which means that the less you wash them, the better they will feel!

2.   When it is time to wash your jeans, turn them inside out and wash them with cold water, rather than warm or hot water. Cold water will help prevent the color from fading too much!

3.   If you have time to squeeze into your busy schedule, try to hand wash your jeans. Fill a sink with water and a little bit of detergent, place your jeans in for an hour, and then rinse. It’s really as easy as pie!

4.   Strive to air dry your denim instead of sticking them in the dryer. This extra step will ensure that your jeans continue to fit your body like a gem.

We all know how hard it can be to find jeans that you love, so make sure you take extra good care of those puppies!

Hope to see you soon!

*obviously you can come in anytime, I’ll just be pouring champagne exclusively for denim shoppers this Thursday!
